Yankee candle reed diffusers? - how to remove reed diffuser

I got for Christmas (yay, I love it), but wonder if I should remove the rubber stopper into the bottle. I have holes in the lid and put the bottle and seem to work well ... but the smell would be great without the CAP, I would say. Remove the cap or not?
